World Population Estimated at 8 Billion
As one of only two institutions in the world that regularly estimates and projects the global population, the International Database published a story for the 8 billion milestone. Here, I summarize global trends in population growth, fertility rates, and mortality trends.

U.S. Births Declined During the Pandemic
As a member of the Census Bureau team producing population estimates of the U.S., I closely tracked domestic fertility trends. This blog post is the result of tracking monthly fluctuations in births at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was cited by numerous press outlets, including AP News and the Financial Times.
Fertility and Population Momentum
Why do some population grow even when they have below-replacement fertility rates? Written as a mid-level resource, I used simulations to illustrate one of the most misunderstood concepts in demography—population momentum. This report is consistently used as the underlying source for Google’s AI explanation of population momentum.

Foetal loss and feminine sex ratios at birth in sub-Saharan Africa
Populations in Sub-Saharan Africa consistently have fewer sons born than expected yet little is known about the mechanism driving the phenomenon of Africa’s “missing boys.” Using classical demographic techniques, I demonstrate that the low sex-ratio at birth may be due to miscarriages which disproportionately affect male fetuses.

Uncertainty About the Size of the Unauthorized Foreign-Born Population in the United States
There is uncertainty around the size of the unauthorized population in the U.S. Using classic demographic techniques and a simulation model, this paper produces a range of plausible estimates around the size of the unauthorized population. I contributed to the production and management of the code for this paper.
Researchers rely on survey data, but survey data can have some weaknesses—particularly around sensitive or painful topics. This report examines the consistency of reporting terminated pregnancies in the Demographic and Health Surveys. I conducted the literature review for this report.
Social support is important for improving many health outcomes, yet personal networks and relationships can be complicated. This paper looks at the nuanced dynamics of social networks for women’s health in Bangladesh; I conducted the statistical analyses for this paper.
